Tommy Burns was born on 16 December 1956 in Glasgow. He began his career with Maryhill FC before Celtic snapped him up in 1973 making his debut against Dundee United in 1975. He made over 350 appearances for the Celts during the 1970s and ’80s winning six league championships, four Scottish Cups and eight Scottish caps before moving to Kilmarnock FC where he began his managerial career. Throughout his career Burns was known as a gentleman of the game and someone who believed in playing football in the right spirit, factors which endeared him to supporters and colleagues alike.

A Celt through and through and a man of true integrity and dignity Burns died after a two year battle with skin cancer in 2008.
